Google Analytics in Maps

Google Analytics Property SetupLink to this section

You need to setup the Google Analytics 4 (GA4) Property to accept a data stream from the Campus Maps domain.

  1. Navigate to Google Analytics.
  2. Go to an existing Property or Create a New One for Campus Maps.
  3. Go to Admin > Data Stream.
  4. Two choices:
    1. You have to have a data stream dedicated for each domain that is being tracked.
    2. Add the campus maps data stream to an existing property OR create a new property that is focused on the campus maps domain.
      1. Note: Google does not recommend mixing domains.
  5. Copy the Data Stream Measurement ID as you will be using it later.

Google Tag Manager SetupLink to this section

You need to setup Google Tag Manager to send data to the Google Analytics data stream.

  1. Navigate to Google Tag Manager.
    1. Create a new account or use an existing one.
  2. Create a tag that connects to the Google Analytics data stream.
  3. Click create New Tag.
  4. Click Tag Configuration and select Google Tag.
  5. Paste the Data Stream ID, that you copied earlier, into the Tag ID Field.
  6. Configure the tag to work through an iframe. (Important: do not overlook these steps.)
    1. Open the Configuration Setting for the Tag.
    2. Add a new variable, with the following options:
      • Config Parameter: cookie_flags
      • Value: samesite=none;secure
    3. Save the Tag.
  7. Submit and Publish the changes.
  8. Go to Admin > Install Google Tag Manager.
  9. Copy the content inside of <script> tag from the first snippet of code, we will be pasting it into you Campus Map Properties later.
    1. You can ignore the second code snippet, the <noscript> part, since Campus Maps requires javascript to run.
  10. Note the Tag Manager ID. You will be using that later to verify that GA4 is sending the information.

Adding Google Tag Manager to Your MapLink to this section

  1. Find the map you want to add analytics to, click Properties.
  2. Set Enable 3rd Party Analytics to Yes.
  3. In the Google Tag Manager Source box, the paste the copied code from Google Tag Manager Setup steps.
  4. For Selected Analytics select Google Tag Manager.
  5. Click Update.
  6. Click Publish.

Verify Data is SentLink to this section

  1. Download a browser extension such as Debugger for Google Analytics (GA4).
  2. When using the extension, if you see your data stream id, then the information is being sent.

Adding Additional Events For TrackingLink to this section

  1. In Google Tag Manager, you can create a new trigger to push events over to GA4.
  2. Choose a trigger type such as "All Elements"
  3. Go through the prompts to define how you want to configure the Google Tag.
    1. To target specific elements on the map, you will need to use the browser inspector on the map.
    2. You can add Google Tags on the map legend and stops; however, targeting the main map itself is not possible.
  4. Save the Tag.
  5. Submit and Publish the Tag Manager account.
  6. Go to your Campus Maps, and clear cache
  7. Your newly added Google Tag will now function as you set it up.
